Transfer Credit for Undergraduates
General Transfer Policies
- A maximum of 70 credit hours from two-year institutions and 90 credit hours from four-year institutions may be applied to the 120-credit hour minimum required for graduation.
- Official transcripts from other institutions should be sent to Salisbury University as soon as possible after course completion.
- Transferred coursework is not included in Salisbury University GPA calculations.
- Questions or appeals related to the evaluation of transferred coursework may be addressed by submitting a Transfer Credit Inquiry (Online form - login required). Evaluations which are more than one year old are not subject to appeal.
- Unless enrolled in an approved cooperative or study abroad program, 30 of the last 37 hours of coursework must be completed at Salisbury University. Exceptions to this policy must be pre-approved by the Academic Affairs Office by submitting a Policy Waiver Request (Online form - login required).

If a course is transferable to SU without an exact match at SU, it may transfer with a Transfer Code instead of a Course Number.

Taking Courses at Another Institution
- Permission to enroll in courses at other regionally accredited institutions by current SU students may be requested by submitting a Request to Study at Another Institution (RTS) - (Online form - login required) prior to enrolling.
- Students may request to transfer coursework only from other regionally accredited institutions. A list of current regionally accredited institutions may be found on the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
- Students should have official transcripts sent to Salisbury University from other institution upon course completion.

Inter-Institutional Registration (IIR)
- Enrolling at another University System of Maryland (USM) institution under Inter-Institutional Registration (IIR) allows full-time students to take a course or courses at a host institution without incurring extra cost.
- Students must maintain full-time status with a combined minimum of 12 credits at the home and host institutions and a minimum of 6 at the home institution.
- Credit earned through IIR is treated as credit earned at Salisbury University.
- The Application for Inter-Institutional Enrollment (PDF) may be submitted to the SU Registrar’s Office, after it’s signed by the department chair.

International Credit
- A professional course-by-course evaluation of all foreign academic transcript(s) is required. This professional evaluation will determine your academic level within the American system of education.
- Prospective students will be required to pay the cost associated with obtaining the professional evaluation.
- World Education Services (WES) is one of several NACES approved professional evaluation services.
- Other approved services may be found on the NACES website.
Non-Traditional Credit

Test Credits – Credit by Examination
- Undergraduates may apply a maximum of 60 approved semester hours of credit by examination coursework toward the completion of a baccalaureate degree.
- Credit by examination coursework can be used to satisfy general education, major and minor requirements with the appropriate approval.
- As curriculum changes, evaluations of credit earned by examination may vary for future semesters. Academic Departments reserve the right to re-evaluate credits earned by examination and make necessary changes to these credits.
- Students who have completed or are enrolled in advanced courses may not receive credit by examination coursework for lower-level courses in the same subjects.
- Current students must obtain approval prior to registering for an exam by submitting a Request to Study at Another Institution (RTS) - (Online form - login required). Approval for Credit by Examination may take up to two weeks by the Registrar's Office.

Advanced Placement (AP) Program
Evaluation Date: Fall 2014 Updated: October 2022
Students who have completed Advanced Placement (AP) course work as part of their high school experience and have taken the corresponding AP examination may be entitled to advanced standing credit at Salisbury University (SU).
Students receiving scores of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP examination are awarded credit for course work at SU as detailed in the following table. The Admission's Office must receive an official score report from the College Board Advanced Placement Program to award credits. To request that scores be sent to SU:

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and English CLEP Exams
Salisbury University awards advanced standing credit to students who have received acceptable scores on College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations provided more advanced or similar course work has not been previously completed.
Students who score at or above the minimum scores established by the University for CLEP examinations are awarded credit for course work at SU as detailed in the following table. A maximum of 24 hours of CLEP credit can be applied to a baccalaureate degree. CLEP credits cannot be used to satisfy course work requirements within the Medical Technology, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy programs unless written approval is obtained from the department chair prior to testing. The Registrar's Office must receive an official score report from the College Board College Level Examination Program to award credits.

International Baccalaureate Program (IB)
Students who earn an IB Certificate will be awarded three-eight semester hours of credit for each Higher Level IB exam completed with a score of 3 or above.
Students who earn an IB Diploma will be awarded three-eight semester hours of credit, up to 30 credits, for scores of 3 or above on both the higher level and the standard level IB exams.

Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)
DANTES credit is reviewed by the Registrar's Office with assistance from the student's academic department. ACE recommendations are consulted to help determine course transferability. Questions about DANTES credits should be directed to the Registrar's Office at registrar@salisbury.edu.

Computer Adaptive Placement Exam (CAPE)
You may earn up to 12 discounted, buy-back credits for your prior language learning in high school in French, German, or Spanish. Note that SU does not automatically award back credits through our Computer Adaptive Placement (CAPE) exam. You must take the recommended course first and receive a C or better.

Departmental Challenge Examinations
Various academic departments at SU administer challenge examinations for specific course work offered by the department. Contact the department chair for specific policies and procedures.

Military Credits
Army, Coast Guard, Navy and Marine Corps: Credit for military educational experiences will be evaluated upon receipt of a student’s official Joint Services Transcript (JST) and may be ordered online at jst.doded.mil.
Air Force: Official transcripts from the community college of the Air Force or Air University should be requested to be sent to Salisbury University.
Limits on transfer credit for military training, coursework or education is governed by the University’s Transfer Credit Policies.
