Internships Available at Delmarva Discovery Center

The Delmarva Discovery Center, a nonprofit cultural, historical, and natural learning center in Pocomoke, Maryland is seeking Husbandry and Education interns for Fall 2013.

Interns are needed in the husbandry and education departments; interns must be comfortable working with a wide array of animals (snakes, turtles, frogs, fish, land and aquatic invertebrates) and possess knowledge... (or be willing to learn) about aquarium care and maintenance for freshwater, brackish, and marine fish and invertebrates.


    Care and safety of animals in DDC collection (this will include daily husbandry and record keeping of all animals and aquatic life systems)

    Maintaining equipment and supplies used in educational programming

    Assist Aquarist in developing and implementing various educational programs

    Develop and present a variety of interpretive programs within the DDC, which will include animal programs, nature walks, fishing trips, kayak trips, puppet shows, storytime, crafts, and independent roves of a program topic of your choice.

    Will independently perform school/tour based programs which will include Animal Programs, Nature Walks, Museum Tours, Craft hour, and Dive Programs

    Will perform other environmental educational programming to partners of the Delmarva Discovery Center, which include Girls Scouts of America and Worcester County Afterschool Academies

    Work as staff member for Fall events

    Will independently perform other tasks as assigned such as assembling exhibits, exhibit maintenance, and animal collection


    Ability to work independently

    Flexible schedule

    Ability and desire to learn new skills

    Experience in working with animals

    Experience in working with aquariums

    Experience in performing environmental educational programs

    CPR certified preferred but not required

While these are unpaid internships, the DDC will work with students to obtain academic credit (if applicable); interns will have the opportunity to deliver public programs and to work in collaboration with the National Park Service, Salisbury Zoo, Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge, NASA, as well as with aquarists and herpetologists from leading zoos and aquariums.  We encourage our applicants to seek credit for the internship through their internship coordinator.
