The Director is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and strategic vision in all areas of human resource management. Responsibilities include hands-on oversight and management of the University’s human resource activities including:

  • Development and implementation of human resources policies, programs and services
  • Recruitment, selection, and retention
  • Employee and labor relations as well as union negotiations
  • Employment practices and procedures
  • Staff communications
  • Compensation and benefits management
  • Staff training and compliance with federal and state labor/employment laws & regulations
  • Legal and BOR USM policies/procedures compliance

Also serves as internal consultant to University's management team, supervisors and staff on personnel issues.

Wendy provides oversight for departmental daily operations in addition to decision making and the development of:

She provides consultative direction to constituents on HR best practices, assists in the development & administration of human resources policies & procedures and acts in the stead of the AVP in her absence.

Vanessa is responsible for benefit and wellness program administration and outreach.

  • Provides consultative services to faculty, staff and retirees on the variety of benefits programs
  • Processes benefits related transactions to include enrollment, corespondence, employee presentations, health fairs, tuition remission, etc.
  • Liaison with the State of Maryland Employee Benefits Division (EBD), State Retirement and other Retirement and benefit plan vensors
  • Coordinating the development, implemntation and administration of the Wellness @ SU program.

Michelle Phillips

Michelle is responsible for providing professional level support with respect to the development, implementation, and administration of the Classification and Compensation programs and HRIS function.

  • Compensation/Classification includes policies and programs, position classification reviews, as well as market surveys and internal data salary reviews.
  • Oversee and/or lead the contractual faculty, staff, and student contract process.
  • HRIS includes maintainance of HRIS and employee records; enter and review HRIS entries to ensure data integrity; coordinate and prepare data files for transmission; conduct and/or coordinate required testing; create queries and prepare reports from databases

As appropriate will also provide support for faculty and staff matters related to various HR functional areas and HR-facets of the employment life-cycle.
