Girls State Returns to SU June 18-23

Girls State logoSALISBURY, MD---From June 18-23, more than 125 high school juniors throughout the state converge on Salisbury University for a hands-on look at what makes government run during the 71st session of the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Maryland Girls State.

Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Maryland, ALA Maryland Girls State is a non-partisan event held at SU since 2009. Participants are assigned to represent fictitious cities and counties, learning how local and state governments work, from elections to the passage of legislation.

Students also hold a mock trial, learning about the judicial process and jury duty responsibility, and meet with local and state legislators.

They are joined by officers from the American Legion Department of Maryland family: ALA Department President Paulette Caron, ALA Junior President Kaori Forsythe, American Legion Commander Patricia McCoy and Sons of the American Legion Detachment Commander Raymond Edwards.
