Water Bottle Filling Station

water bottle filling station in operation

In an effort to reduce the number of plastic bottles going to landfills, Salisbury University has installed water bottle filling stations in most campus buildings.  These complimentary water stations filter tap water and allow hands-free filling of reusable water bottles. Many of the devices provide a digital readout which indicates the number of plastic bottles avoided.  All told, the bottle filling stations have thus far offset the disposal of nearly two million plastic bottles.

The Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable estimates that one 500-milliliter plastic bottle of water has a total carbon footprint equivalent to 82.8 grams of carbon dioxide.  Additionally, it takes 3 liters of water to produce one liter of bottled water.
