Global Programs

The program is created by the Perdue School of Business, in collaboration with the Austral Group in Buenos Aires to offer students an opportunity to experience Argentina’s fast changing economy and society. You will have the opportunity to visit Buenos Aires, one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America. Located in the southern hemisphere, Argentina has a very warm and usually sunny month of January. From Buenos Aires, students will be able to organize their own visits to other cities such as Montevideo [Uruguay] as well as other touristic areas such as the Iguazu Falls, Punta Del Este or Patagonia. Buenos Aires is one of the key members of Mercosur [Mercado Común del Sur] and is home to a number of multinational corporations, including, Peugeot Citroën Argentina, GlaxoSmithKline Argentina and Molinos Rio de la Plata to name just a few.

The Courses: BUAD 396 Business Studies Abroad (Doing Business in Latin America) is open to any student (Business and non-business major). There is no prerequisite.

Study of the international aspects of business management and the environment of international business. This course focuses on the emerging markets in Latin America. It provides a balanced coverage of current business and political issues in these countries. The main objective is for the students to acquire a broad understanding of the way business is conducted in this part of the world. The course includes: analysis of the international business environment, case studies, guest speakers, and company’s visits; the Volkswagen plant, the Buenos Aires Harbor terminal Zarate, the winemaker Bodegas Norton. While in Buenos Aires, students will attend classes in the Austral Offices. Other time slots are reserved for guest speakers, cultural activities such as museum and city tours.

On May 22, 2009, sixteen students and three faculty members boarded a flight from Washington, DC to Beijing. Their ultimate destination was Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, China. Five accounting students completed three credits of the cost accounting requirements in their major—eleven students studied international economics and fulfilling the international requirement for the Perdue School professional degree. But more importantly, these students developed relationships with their Chinese counterparts by studying with them, exploring local city sights and even challenging their new friends to a little pick-up basketball and sidewalk hackysack! In addition to studying in Dalian, the trip included visits to the Asian economic powerhouse of Shanghai and the venerable Chinese capital of Beijing, with its ancient palaces, luxurious gardens and ultimate climb to the Great Wall.

The Winter Term Study Abroad program is sponsored by the Perdue School of Business of Salisbury University in cooperation with Universite de Blaise Pascal. The program enables you to experience the European Union, the most ambitious form of economic integration in modern times. France is also one of the world’s major industrialized economies. Our program will be located in Vichy at the foot of the alps and in the heart of France’s high tech center.

Germany/London

Students in our global programs take a 3 credit course taught by SU faculty; these are supplemented by guest lecturers from our host school and field trips to local businesses and to historic sites. The winter term program has been held in five different countries (Britain, Chile, France, Germany, and Ireland).

Program:

The Estonia: Business and Politics in Europe summer program provides SU students the opportunity to spend three weeks in late July and early August studying in the northern European nation of Estonia. Bathed in sunlight for up to 15 hours a day during late July and early August, Estonia is a picturesque European destination nestled along the Baltic Sea in northeast Europe. Estonia is a strategic member of NATO and the EU common market, with a highly developed Information Technology infrastructure and a vibrant economy. The historical and cultural meeting of Europe and the West with Russia and the East make Estonia a fascinating place to study abroad.

Locations:

The University of Tartu was founded in 1632 by the King of Sweden Gustav II Adolph and is one of the most venerable centers of education and research in northern Europe. Since 2010, Salisbury University and the University of Tartu have collaborated on the Salisbury Abroad: Estonia semester study abroad program. The Perdue School of Business led the first summer study abroad program to the University of Tartu in 2008.

The program is divided into three week modules, each week taught in a different Estonian city. The first week is spent on the main campus of University of Tartu in the historical college town of Tartu. Nestled on the banks of the River Emajõgi, Tartu is considered the cultural and intellectual center of the nation. Because of the concentration of college students in this historic town, Tartu has an active nightlife with clubs, bars, and restaurants. The second week, the program moves is held in the beach resort town of Pärnu. Pärnu is a West-Estonian resort on the Baltic with beautiful, sandy beaches in the heart of the city. The third week, the program finishes in the historic capital city of Tallinn. Long regarded as one of the best preserved medieval cities in all of Europe, Tallinn the capital is the site of the third week. Tallinn was featured as the European Capital of Culture throughout 2011. The weekend between Session II and III, the program will make a special field-trip to the Baltic island of Saaremaa, Estonia’s largest island and a popular tourist destination.

Courses:

Students take one (1) of two courses during their three weeks in Estonia. Both courses will have enrollment from SU students and students from around Europe and the world who are also studying at the Summer University at the University of Tartu, providing students with an integrated globalized learning environment:

• BUAD 396/BUAD 696 – Business Studies Abroad: Managing Across Cultures (3 credits). Taught by faculty from the Perdue School of Business, the course focuses on the fundamentals of international management, addressing the challenges of doing business internationally including cultural dimensions, the strategic and structural issues, and human resources issues. Can be taken for undergraduate (jrs. And srs.) or graduate credit. Admission to the program and in good standing academically and socially with the university.
• POSC 204 - Topics in Political Science: European and Russian Foreign Policy and Security Challenges in the New Millennium (4 credits). Taught by partner faculty at the University of Tartu, the course provides a general overview of the Baltic region, dealing daily with crucial issues such as security building, welfare creation, conflict and cooperation; studies Russia and her foreign policy; elaborates European Union integration issues while explaining the impact of enlargement process to policy reforms. Meets General Education IIIB or IIIC.
