FERPA for Student’s Family Members
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA affords eligible students certain rights with respect to their educational records. An “eligible student” under FERPA is a student who is 18 years of age or older or who attends a postsecondary institution.
Do parents have a right of access to their child’s educational records?
FERPA defines an eligible student as a student who has reached 18 years of age or is attending a postsecondary institution at any age. This means that, at the secondary level, once a student turns 18, all the rights that once belonged to his or her parents transfer to the student.
Requesting access to your student’s educational records
Family members can initiate a request for access to their student’s information through SU’s Family Experience Portal. On the day after the request is approved, the family member will have access to view the student’s information. Data displayed in the Portal is updated nightly .

To accept their family member’s request, students must first accept the connection. Then they must approve the individual FERPA requests. Family members can either request everything or choose what they would like to see à la carte. Similarly, the student can either grant access to everything or pick and choose what they would like their family member to have access to. Students can revoke access at any time by logging into the Family Experience Portal with their SU single sign on username and password.
