SU Hosts “Hereafter” Exhibit

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Guerrieri Student Union Art Space hosts the exhibit “Hereafter” by senior B.F.A. major Mary Sullivan through Friday, March 26.

Originally from Baltimore, Simon has a concentration in ceramics. She also works with multiple mediums, including wood, wax, slip, paints, charcoal and cast metal. Her work explores grief and the passage of time.

“Since my mother's death, I have become interested in exploring past memories and the meaning of time,” she said. “I'm in love with creating work that explores the idea of ephemerality. That's why I enjoy using organic materials to construct my recent paintings. The organic materials I use, such as ceramic slip and charcoal reinforces the concept of life and death. 

"After death, living organisms will eventually return to the Earth. By abstracting my figurative forms, I have the freedom to express my emotions while allowing the viewer to have their own narratives. I love to use my hands to physically put materials on the surface of the canvas. The texture left on the canvas is proof of the physicality, my touch. Almost like capturing a photograph, it is a moment in time.”
