Bridges to the World International Film Festival Begins February 16

SALISBURY, MD---Today’s economic climate may not allow for international vacations in exotic places like Egypt or China—so Salisbury University is bringing those countries to campus.

This semester, SU hosts the Bridges to the World International Film Festival as part of the World Artists Experiences, Inc. Ambassador Program. All films are screened at 7 p.m. in Caruthers Hall Auditorium.

Countries represented are:

Monday, February 16 – Estonia: Vastutuulesaal (Headwind Hall). This documentary follows conductor Tõnu Kaljuste as he strives to build an opera house in the unlikely locale of Naissaar, an island which even today has no regular ferry line, no electricity and only one permanent resident.
Monday, February 23 – Egypt: Gharam fi al-Karnak (Love in Karnak). This 1965 film blends the nation’s past and 20th century cultural traditions in a fictionalized account of the founding of Egypt’s first national folkloric dance troupe.
Monday, March 2 – China: Ru Guo Ai (Perhaps Love). Called a Chinese version of Moulin Rouge, this movie explores how the past influences actions in the present, in this instance relating to a love triangle.
Monday, March 9 – Ecuador: film to be announced.

“In conjunction with World Artists Experiences and the Embassies of Estonia, Egypt, China and Ecuador, Salisbury University is proud to be one of only four chosen Ambassador Sites for hosting this festival,” said June Krell-Salgado, SU cultural affairs director.

The other sites include Frostburg University, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis and Towson University.

Sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs, Maryland Office of the Secretary of State International Division, and World Artists Experiences, Inc., admission is free and the public is invited. SU is one of four locations hosting the festival nationally.
