Hoffman Earns 2013 SU Distinguished Faculty Award

“Dr. Hoffman is, first and foremost, an excellent teacher,” said Dr. Bob Wood, dean of the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, noting that Hoffman has been invited as a visiting professor on two continents. “At the same time, he is an active and dedicated scholar. In addition to almost 40 peer-reviewed articles (including four in the last five years), Dr. Hoffman has an impressive resume of book chapters, presentations before learned societies and other scholarly works.”
According to Dr. Frank Shipper, Management and Marketing Department chair, who nominated Hoffman, he is “an academic role model in the Perdue School.”
As a Fulbright Scholar, Hoffman taught at the University of Tartu, Estonia, last spring. He also has taught as a visiting professor at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in China and Grenoble Ecole de Management in France. As interim dean of the Perdue School from 2007-2010, he oversaw a $7.3 million budget, and helped the school earn accreditation from the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS) and reaccreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AASCB).
In addition, he helped launch a new M.B.A. curriculum and a satellite program at the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD; assisted in the planning and design for Perdue Hall; and initiated the first SU Abroad alumni chapter, in Europe.
On campus, Hoffman has served on many boards and committees, including the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Committee and International Education Committee.
In the community, he is a member of the Wor-Wic Community College Business and Accounting Advisory Board and past chair of the Go-Getters, Inc. board of directors, serving individuals suffering from mental illnesses.
“In summary, the committee identified an exemplary teacher, internationally recognized scholar and service leader who richly deserves this prestigious award,” said Dr. Victoria Hutchinson, Faculty Awards and Recognition Committee chair.
As the 65th SU Distinguished Faculty Award winner, Hoffman will be included on a plaque listing all recipients since the honor was established in 1987. The plaque was unveiled during the announcement of this year’s award.
