Jayamangala Performs April 30" 

SALISBURY, MD---The East Indian Dance group Jayamangala, complete with silk saris and temple jewelry, performs Monday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Caruthers Hall Auditorium as part of Salisbury State University's Multicultural Festival Week. The performance is free and the public is invited. 

Shobha Subramanian and her son Ashwin, two members of the group, perform the Bharatanatyam--a classical dance routine that originated in south India and is based on stories of Hindu gods and goddesses. The dance requires several years of rigorous training to develop the necessary footwork, hand gestures and facial expressions, she said.

India's top instructors taught Shobha Subramanian the dance. She has lectured and performed the dance throughout the world including India, Europe and the United States.

For the past eight years she also has been teaching this art form. Her son began taking lessons from her seven years ago.The Maryland State Arts Council awarded Shobha Subramanian the solo dancer's grant in 1994 and 2000.
