SU Arts Minute - Summer 2017

Welcome to Salisbury University’s Cultural Calendar Highlights for summer 2017.

Two exhibits continue at SU’s Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons through Wednesday, May 31. “When Communities Come Together: African American Education on the Eastern Shore,” in the first-floor lobby, showcases the post-Civil War educational triumphs and challenges for African Americans in the region.

On the fourth floor, the Edward H. Nabb Research Center’s G. Ray Thompson Gallery hosts “The Stage Is Set: Leland Starnes and the Salisbury State Theatre,” a look back at a “golden age” of SU theatre under Starnes’ direction, from 1970-1980.

Throughout this summer, the Nabb Center also showcases the exhibit “Delmarva: People, Place and Time,” a self-guided display highlighting aspects of the peninsula’s history.

SU Art Galleries also opens two exhibits this summer. “Living on the Land,” a group exhibition curated by Jayme McLellan of Civilian Art Projects in Washington, D.C., runs June 1 through August 5 in the SU Art Galleries Downtown Campus. Receptions are June 16 and July 21.

Artist Tania Lou Smith combines humor, costumes, composition and play in a series of performance videos detailing small acts of escape for the exhibit “Untitled (domestic gestures),” on display in the Electronic Gallery of Conway Hall from June 19-August 12.

In addition, the exhibit “IN TRAINING,” featuring works by artist Liss LaFleur, continues in the Electronic Gallery through Saturday, June 10. The exhibit reflects LaFleur’s research on French feminist artist, photographer and writer Claude Cahun.
