SU Undergraduates Present Research at National Conference

SALISBURY, MD---Some 25 Salisbury University students recently attended the 2014 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY.

“Their presentations and poster sessions covered a wide array of information representative of all our academic schools,” said Dr. Clifton Griffin, dean of graduate studies and research. “NCUR is highly competitive and having 25 SU representatives speaks to caliber of undergraduate research being conducted at Salisbury University.”

Topics ranged from the human geography of Assateague Island and the relationship between America’s Democratic and Green parties, to studies of Atlantic killifish, relationship aggression, Queen Mary I, Zimbabwe aid, masculinized women in romantic literature, the loss of gay culture, and more.

Student presenters from Salisbury included: Alysha Allen and Asha Azariah-Kribbs, both senior English majors; Amanda Tees-Bulgarelli, a senior history major; and Cassandra Newcomb, a senior anthropology and archeology major.

Other local student presenters included Hillary Daye, a junior history major from Berlin; Edwin Miranda, a senior kinesiology and exercise science major from Pittsville; and Joseph Watso, a junior kinesiology and exercise science major from Willards.

Other student presenters included: Elora Amtower, a senior literature major from Clarksville, MD; Hannah Benden, a junior literature major from Bel Air, MD; Amanda Biederman, a senior biology major from Westmister, MD; William Castor, a senior kinesiology and exercise science from Mt. Airy, MD; Steven Cenname, a senior political science major from Derwood, MD; Patrick Ferrara, a senior kinesiology and exercise major from Hamilton, NJ; Alexandra Fox, a junior history major from Huntingtown, MD; Erika Gerhold, a senior mathematics major from Smithsburg, MD; Marguerite Gilchrist, a senior kinesiology and exercise science major from Glen Burnie, MD; Anthony Grayson, a senior sociology major from Brunswick, MD; Thomas Green, a senior geography and earth sciences major from Pomfret, MD; Artura Jackson, a senior history major from Upper Marlboro, MD; Bernice Jere, a senior sociology from Harare, Zimbabwe; Ashley Jeter, a senior sociology from Smithsburg, MD; Matthew Mignosa, a senior psychology major from Brinklow, MD; Elena Ramirez, a senior economics major from Hyattsville, MD; Shealyn Tucker, a sophomore mathematics major from Waldorf, MD; and Rebecca Zimmerman, a senior sociology major from Baltimore, MD.

SU is the only Maryland campus that has hosted NCUR.  All of these student participants earned $700 travel grants from SU to assist with costs.
