Women in Business One-Day Seminar

SALISBURY, MD---Women are increasingly attaining leadership roles in both the private and public sectors, yet they often encounter obstacles in trying to promote positive change.

A one-day seminar series, "Women on the Rise: Earning the Keys to the Executive Suite," is targeted at women on all steps of the corporate, government and non-profit ladders. Sponsored by the Women's Business Institute (WBI) and Allfirst, the seminars presented by women leaders from an array of professional backgrounds are on Thursday, March 21, from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at Salisbury University.

Keynote speakers are Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach, president of SU, Christine Sarbanes, career professional and wife of U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes, business owner and columnist Dr. Valerie Young and Judge Sally D. Adkins, associate judge, Maryland Court of Special Appeals.

Dudley-Eshbach, SU's first woman president in its 76-year history, examines the historic roles of women in higher education and assesses the differences in management styles between male and female CEOs.

Sarbanes, an expert in classical studies, dedicated community volunteer and campaign assistant for her husband, discusses "The Keys to Having It All," with advice for career women on how to balance personal, family and business responsibilities and achieve success in all three areas.

Young is an internationally-known workshop leader and public speaker specializing in helping people focus on results. She offers women information on how to leverage their power to achieve greater personal and professional success.

Adkins, the first woman to serve as a trial court judge on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, provides her unique perspective about, "A Woman's View from the Appellate Bench."

Seven seminars are featured throughout the day: "The Keys to Understanding Customer Loyalty," with Paula T. Morris, marketing consultant and university instructor; "The Keys to Smart Business: An Introduction to Healing Your Relationship with Money," with Paula Langguth Ryan, author of Bounce Back from Bankruptcy; "The Keys to Business Growth: Secrets of Business Success-Practical and Spiritual," with Charlotte Scott, owner of East Coast Operations; "The Keys to Effective Presentations: Being a Dynamic Speaker," with Kathryn Redden, motivational speaker and human resources professional; "The Keys to Legal Business: Avoiding Legal Battles," with Nancy Chernoff, who recently opened her own law firm; "The Keys to Expression: Total Image-Change the Way the World Looks at You," with Deborah Bryant, beauty consultant; and "The Keys to Successfully Networking and Effective Communication," with Redden.

Additionally, guest speaker Kelley Rouse, news anchor and producer at Delmarva News TV Channel 47 in Salisbury, talks about "Women Balancing Career and Family."

Cost of the seminars, breakfast, lunch and reception is $70 if paid before March 10; late registration is an additional $15. To attend the reception only the cost is $25. Tabletop displays for seminar registrants are an additional $35.

The Women's Business Institute, partially funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, has its headquarters in Taneytown, MD. The Eastern Shore chapter of the WBI, located in Salisbury University's Power Professional Building, is a non-profit organization dedicated to enabling women to launch new businesses and more successfully run existing businesses. WBI provides workshops, business roundtables, no-cost business counseling services and other programs that support and accelerate women in business.

The "Women on the Rise" seminars are sponsored by WBI and Allfirst in cooperation with the Center for Professional Development at Salisbury University, the Eastern Shore Region Small Business Development Center and Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE).
