IDIS 280, Embracing Wonder:

Experiencing Art and Culture on Campus

  • Tuesday 6:30-9:15 pm, TE 129
  • October 16 - December 9, 2024
  • INSTRUCTOR: Tara Gladden, M.F.A.

This 7-week course invites students to embark on a journey through SU’s vibrant world of art and culture. Using our cultural magazine, Panorama as a guide, this course offers a curated experience of each semester’s offerings. Over the course of the semester students will attend live performances, literature and poetry programs, lectures, films, art gallery exhibitions both independently and as a class. These experiences are punctuated by in-class discussions, written reflection assignments, and visits with guest artists and lecturers. This combination of in-class activities and direct hands-on exposure to live events is designed to offer students a greater understanding of the elements that create meaning in artistic expression and define its role in society. Over the course of the semester discussions may include topics such as the social, philosophical, and political underpinnings at work in artistic and cultural phenomena, decoding metaphorical meaning and symbolism, and understanding style and aesthetics within given forms. Open to students and the public, this course also serves as an introductory course for students entering into SU’s Cultural Fellowship Program.
