ChemComp Winners Announced

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury State University’s Department of Chemistry and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Salisbury recently sponsored ChemComp, a chemistry competition between Delmarva high schools.

The contest consisted of six events ranging from "Going for the Gold," a game which utilizes basic chemistry knowledge, to "Cashew Calorimetry," where the energy contained in one cashew is determined. Certificates and prizes were awarded to the top teams of each classification (first year or advanced placement level).

Winners of the first year level were: first place, Stephen Decatur High School, students Ann Bounds, David Foley and Katie Hand, mentor Fran Brittingham; second place, Sts. Peter & Paul (Easton), students Jose Alvarado, James Bell and Kevin Caldwell, mentor Diane Doyle; and third place, Pocomoke High School, students Brian Miles, Ruth Glagola and Kristine Huff, mentor Orville LaCurts.

Winners of the second year/advanced level were: first place, Pocomoke High School, students Sarah Nordstrom, Kelly West and Julian Avila, mentor Orville LaCurts; second place, Wootton High School (Gaithersburg, MD), students Lei Jiang, Neil Singh and Jason Tan, mentor Beverly Stross; and third place, Worcester Country School, students Hillary Hoffman, Martha Anderson and Brett Martin, mentor Colleen McGuire.

Other participants in the first year competition were: Sts. Peter and Paul, students Bridget Swan, Megan Haley and Christina Calvert, mentor Diane Doyle; and Woodbridge High School, students Rachel Dawson, John Conner and Robert Tribbet, mentor, Helen Gieske.

Participants in the second year/advanced placement category were: Sts. Peter & Paul, students Patrick Cottingham, Michael Schultz and John Mulflur, mentor Diane Doyle; Stephen Decatur High School, students Oliver Arend, Nate Bates and Jeff Chin, mentor Fran Brittingham; and Urbana High School, students James Lipchock, Anthony O’Berry and Dustin Muniz, mentor Michelle Meredith.
