Chamber Winds/Wind Ensemble Spring Concert May 4

SALISBURY, MD--The Salisbury State University Chamber Winds and Wind Ensemble present their Spring Concert in Holloway Hall Auditorium On Tuesday, May 4 at 8 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public.

Selections for performance by the Chamber Winds include The "Allegro" movement from Joaquim Raff's "Sinfonietta"(1873) for 10 winds and Jean Francaix's "Sept Dances" (1970) arranged by the composer for double wind quintet from his ballet. Although Francaix composed his ballet "Le Malheur" de Sophie in 1935, it was not until 1970 that he transcribed the ballet music for the Sept Dances. The ballet itself was derived from the children's book of the same title, written by Rostov Leine, depicting the misadventures of 3-year-old Sophie and her 5-year-old cousin, Paul. Other selections for Wind Ensemble include "March for the Spartakiade"(1935) by Sergei Prokofiev, "Havendance" (1985) by David R. Holsinger, "Divertimento" (1993) by Roger Cichy, and " Marcia Trionfale" (c. 1860) by Amilcare Ponchielli.

Graduate conducting assistants to Dr. Richard L. Johnson, conductor of the Chamber Winds and Wind Ensemble and music director of the SSU instrumental studies program, are Christopher Reavis and Niko Iampieri, graduates of Salisbury State with degrees in music education. Reavis will conduct Elliot Del Borgo's "Prelude and Toccata" (1993) for band and Iampieri will conduct Paul Hart's "Journey and Celebration" (1989) for band.

Iampieri is director of bands at Greenwood Middle School in Princess Anne, MD. While at Salisbury State, he performed with the SSU Wind Ensemble, the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, and the Brass Quintet and Nomadic Brass.

Reavis still performs with the Wind Ensemble, Salisbury Community Band and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra. Currently he is an instrumental music teacher in the Indian River (DE) School District and teaches private percussion lessons at Salisbury Music and Instrument Repair.
