SSU's Project Management Group Hosts Transportation Summit June 22

SALISBURY, MD--The lack of a regional master plan for transportation has become an increasingly important public policy challenge on the Lower Eastern Shore.

A grass-roots initiative to help craft a regional solution to transportation challenges is evolving. To launch the process, Salisbury State University's Project Management Group is hosting A Transportation Summit for the Lower Eastern Shore on Tuesday, June 22, from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Commons on the SSU campus.

Many individuals and organizations are touched by the transportation issue, said Dr. Memo Diriker, director of the Project Management Group and professor of marketing in the Perdue School of Business at SSU. Our social services departments struggle to find transportation for customers seeking to establish their independence through employment.

Employers find that lack of transportation interferes with their ability to build reliable workforce, said Diriker. The elderly and disabled seek transportation to meet their daily needs. And, as the Shore's population grows, many are concerned about the environmental impact of an over-reliance on cars, which affects all of us who live, work or visit the Shore.

The summit will include representatives from many groups in the tri-county area (Somerest, Worcester and Wicomico) with an interest in regional transportation, including transportation providers, transportation users, employers, elected officials and state and local administrators. A goal of the meeting is to lay the organizational foundation for a year-long regional planning process.
