SU Celebrates Alumni Homecoming and Family Weekend

Homecoming Family WeekendSALISBURY, MD---From reunions to fun activities for alumni, parents and students, Salisbury University’s 2018 Alumni Homecoming and Family Weekend is packed with excitement.

Events begin Thursday, October 11, with the annual faculty emeriti and retired staff luncheon from noon-2 p.m. in the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons Assembly Hall. (Admission to the luncheon is by invitation only.)

Activities continue with the Maroon & Gold Club’s annual golf tournament at 10 a.m. Friday, October 12, at Nutters Crossing Golf Course. Entry fee is $75 per player, $260 per team. Pre-registration is required.

The Residence Hall Association’s annual powder puff football game is 2:30 p.m. that day on Holloway Hall Lawn. From 4:30-7:30 p.m., University Dining Services presents a “Taste of the Chesapeake” dinner, featuring the band Red Letter Day, in the Commons. Cost is $14.20, $12.85 for alumni, $8.55 for children ages 5 and under.

That evening, the SU Athletics Hall of Fame inducts six new members during its annual banquet at 6 p.m. in the GAC Assembly Hall. They are: Sue Ackermann (’08 women’s lacrosse), Erin Budd (’05 field hockey), Chase Caruso (’08 men’s lacrosse), Brad DeHaven (’05 football), Dan Lader (’05 men’s soccer) and Justin Smith (’05 men’s lacrosse).Admission is $35, $30 for past inductees. Pre-registration is required.

Saturday events begin with an open house at the Alumni House and Miller Alumni Garden from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. A luncheon for alumni graduating prior to 1974 is 11 a.m. in the Worcester Room of the Commons. The class of 1968 is honored on its 50th anniversary. Admission is $20, free for Class of ’68 members, and pre-registration is required. The classes of 1933, 1938, 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963 and 1973 will be recognized, as well.

Sea Gull Football hosts Montclair State University (NJ) at 1 p.m. Admission is $7; $5 for alumni, seniors and non-SU students; $3 for children 5-12; free for children under 5. SU ID holders receive one ticket free.

A “Sweet Treat After the Game” social, with a craft activity for younger children and photos with Sammy Sea Gull, follows from 3-4:30 p.m. at Sammy’s Angle outside Henson Science Hall.

Tailgating begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of South Division and Avery streets. Entrance to the tailgate area is $10 per vehicle. Visit www.salisbury.edu/alumni/alumni-association/homecoming/tailgating.aspx for information about tailgating policies and procedures.

Special reunions during tailgating include the annual Geography and Geosciences Department/SU Geography Alumni Alliance barbecue and a biological sciences alumni meet-and-greet.

The Multicultural Student Services Office hosts a post-game alumni jazz social in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri Student Union from 4-7 p.m.

A hot rod and antique car show from 3-5 p.m. Saturday between Henson Science and Perdue halls. Entry is free, but space is limited. Pre-registration is recommended.

On Sunday, October 14, SU honors late Alumni Association Past President Rob Schultheis by partnering with organizers for the third annual “Run the Boards Like Rob” memorial 5K and walk on the Ocean City, MD, boardwalk. The run begins 9 a.m. at the Dough Roller restaurant, 606 S. Atlantic Ave. Registration is $30. Proceeds benefit the Robert Schultheis Memorial Scholarship at SU.

Alumni Homecoming and Family Weekend events end with a jazz brunch from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday in the Commons. Cost is $11.55, $10.50 for alumni, $5.90 for children under 5.

The week also includes student-centered events such as a pep rally and step show hosted by recognized student organizations.

SU Libraries hosts its annual book sale throughout Homecoming and Family Weekend. The University’s Gull Gear store opens at Sea Gull Stadium at noon on Saturday and remains open until the end of the football game.

Other SU activities that weekend include the Bobbi Biron Theatre Program’s production of Sarah Ruhl’s Stage Kiss from October 11-14 in the Black Box Theatre of Fulton Hall. Admission is $12; $9 for seniors age 60-plus and SU faculty, staff and alumni; $5 for non-SU students; $3 for SU students with Gull Card. The play is recommended for mature audiences.

The Jerry Tabor Ear Alliance, featuring SU music faculty, continues the Center for Extended and Lifelong Learning’s monthly Feature Friday performance series at The Brick Room in downtown Salisbury, 116 N. Division St., from 6-7 p.m. October 12.

In addition, SU’s Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art holds its annual Chesapeake Wildfowl Expo from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. October 12. A “Golden Goose” reception and auction from 5-8 p.m. celebrates the Ward Foundation’s 50th anniversary. Tickets to the reception are $65, $50 for SU faculty, staff and students, and museum members.
