Management Research by SU's Shipper Makes Global Impact
SALISBURY, MD---While the first thought of a college or university may be students and their education, a significant role for faculty also can be research and publication.
These opportunities are among the ways faculty members can make an impact around the world, and enrich the learning experience for their students.
The works of Dr. Frank Shipper, professor emeritus of management and marketing in Salisbury University’s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, have been studied by individuals in more than 160 countries, including the United Kingdom, India, Australia, Germany, France, Indonesia, Pakistan and many more.
Shipper’s publications include collaborations with Drs. Stephen Adams, Thomas Calo, Wayne Decker, Richard Hoffman, Olivier Roche, Vera Street, Christy Weer and other current and former SU faculty members.
“Each of these colleagues made contributions to this body of research and broaden my knowledge,” said Shipper. “We became friends as well as colleagues. They made SU a special place to work.”
Most recently, a case study authored by Shipper and Hoffman regarding the John Lewis Partnership (JLP) – the largest employee-owned business in the U.K. – was adopted by the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmadabad, India. The institute, the second-ranked business school in India, is a designated an Institute of National Importance by the Ministry of Human Resources within the Indian Government.
The study, discussing what the company will do after nearly 100 years in business and the impact of “Brexit” – Great Britain’s planned exit from the European Union – was officially published in June and adapted for the Indian Institute of Management just six weeks later.
The JLP case is only one of 12 that Shipper and his colleagues have had published in the last 10 years. Academia.edu, which tracks use of academic writings around the world, reported that more than 60 percent of readers of their research have been from outside the U.S.
