Rocha Discusses 'The Letter: A Response to Power in Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and Bartolome de las Casas' October 20

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Sam Rocha, associate professor of philosophy of education at the University of British Columbia, presents “The Letter: A Response to Power in Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and Bartolomé de las Casas” 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, in Salisbury University’s Conway Hall, Room 380.

“Speaking truth to power” is a common expression that is worth considering more deeply. What does it mean to speak truth to power? How does one do such a thing? And why would individuals value or even emulate the voice that speaks truth to power?

Considering the letters of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and Bartolomé de las Casas, from the 16th and 17th centuries, standing in the colonial threshold of modernity and the Americas, Rocha will discuss this expression and argue for the poetic need of a response through the small way of the written letter.

Sponsored by the Fulton Public Humanities program and Philosophy Department, admission is free and the public is invited.
