Author Ndibe Continues Writers-on-the-Shore Series Thursday, November 17

SALISBURY, MD---Author and political commentator Okey Ndibe continues Salisbury University’s fall Writers-on-the-Shore series 8 p.m. Thursday, November 17.

He reads from his novel, Arrows of Rain, in the Montgomery Room of the Commons.

Following a career as a magazine editor in his native Nigeria, Ndibe moved to the United States in 1988 and became the founding editor of African Commentary, an award-winning magazine published by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe. A visiting writer-in-residence and assistant professor of English at Trinity College, Harford, CT, Ndibe has contributed poems to An Anthology of New West African Poets, edited by Gambian poet Tijan Sallah. He also has published essays in magazines throughout North America, Britain and Nigeria, and writes a weekly column for the Guardian, Nigeria's most respected daily newspaper.

Published in 2000, Arrows of Rain tells the story of Bukuru, who witnessed a young woman’s suicide by drowning. Asked to provide a statement about the event to law enforcement authorities, Bukuru is taken to court, where he must calculate the cost of silence in the face of stories he feels must be told. In the book, Ndibe dramatizes the relationship between an individual and the African state, examining the erosion of moral insight in both public and private life.
