BEACON Outreach Network at SU Receives Award

SALISBURY, MD-- Salisbury University's Business, Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) recently received the Shore Leadership Association's 2001 Economic Development award.

BEACON was honored for its outstanding work in economic development, one of the six primary focus areas for Shore Leadership. The focus areas are education, legacy, technology, economic development and community. Dr. Memo Diriker, director of BEACON, accepted the award on behalf of the organization. In presenting the award to BEACON, Alan Silverstein, executive director of the Shore Leadership Association, said, "This organization exemplifies the highest standards in its category."

The Shore Leadership Association is a training, development and networking organization operating on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The award recognizes organizations that have promoted regional excellence through their projects and services. It was presented at the first annual Shore Leadership Association Recognition Ceremony at Chesapeake College.

BEACON's key economic development initiatives within the past year include the Shore Transit Regional Public Transportation Project; Bienvenidos a Delmarva, aimed at helping organizations that serve the expanding Hispanic population on the Eastern Shore; support for efforts to enhance connectivity on the Eastern Shore; and various projects in support of the agribusiness industry.

BEACON is affiliated with SU's Franklin P.
