Celebrate Kwanzaa at SU Saturday, December 11

SALISBURY, MD---Celebrate Kwanzaa at Salisbury University 1 p.m. Saturday, December 11, with a program of song, poetry and cultural expression in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall. Student organizations demonstrate the Nguzo Saba, or Seven Principles, of the holiday. Students Adrienne Parker and Portia Wright host. Presenters include: the Union of African-American Students—Umoja (unity), The Truth social club—Kujichagulia (self-determination), The Untouchables dance club—Ujima (collective work and responsibility), SU chapter of the NAACP—Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Step Squad—Nia (purpose), Pashion For Fashion—Kuumba (creativity), and Gospel Choir—Imani (faith). Parker concludes the demonstrations with Hambiko (libation). Kwanzaa is a Ki Swahili word meaning “first” and signifying “first fruits,” derived from the phrase “Matunde Ya Kwanza.” During the celebration, observers give thanks for progress, establish individual goals, honor members of the African community and share the fruits of hard work and commitment expressed throughout the year.
