Chamber Orchestra Kremlin Moscow Comes to SU Nov. 23

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University hosts one of the world’s premier chamber orchestras when the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin Moscow performs 2 p.m. Sunday, November 23, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

The performance includes Edvard Grieg’s suite From Holberg’s Time, Leos Janacek’s Suite for Strings and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Originally written for piano, Time is one of the most frequently performed and recorded compositions transcribed for the string orchestra. Suite features six movements, each with its own atmosphere, giving the piece a broad emotional range.

Serenade was one of Tchaikovsky’s personal favorites. Written simultaneously with the 1812 Overture, he conducted it throughout Europe, as well as in Baltimore and Philadelphia during his 1891 visit to the United States.

The Chamber Orchestra Kremlin has received glowing reviews from newspapers throughout North America. According to the New York Times, from the orchestra “a listener expected lush textures … . The surprise was the sense of grandeur they brought to Tchaikovsky’s arching, bittersweet lines.”

Founded in 1991 to record a series of Russian works for the Swiss recording company Rachlevsky and Claves, the orchestra is comprised of some of Russia’s finest young string players. Under the direction of Misha Rachlevsky, the orchestra is known for its warmth and high-energy performances. Rachlevsky founded the New American Chamber Orchestra and the City Chamber Orchestra of Granada, Spain.

The SU Office of Cultural Affairs and Museum Programs, Multi-Ethnic Student Services and International Education Office sponsor the event. The performance is free and the public is cordially invited.
