ChemComp Winners Announced"  

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury State University’s Department of Chemistry and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Salisbury recently  sponsored ChemComp, a chemistry competition between high schools throughout the State of Maryland.

The competition, which consisted of six events ranging from “Going for the Gold,” a game utilizing basic chemistry knowledge, to “Cashew Calorimetry,” where the energy contained in one cashew was determined. Certificates and prizes were awarded to the top teams of each classification (first year or advanced placement level).

Winners of the first year level were: first place, James M. Bennett High School, team Neon, students Megan Williams, Kevan Sulimian and Adam Meeks, mentor Ron Peterman; second place, Western School of Technology and Environmental Science (Baltimore), team Atomic Accelerators, students Sara Minor, James Culver and Rajiv Chakravarthy, mentor Gina Lowther; third place, Wootton High School (Rockville), team Chem-IS-Try, students Anna Blasiak, Carl (CJ) Cimino and Jamie Shenk, mentor Beverly Sivaslian.

Second year/advanced level winners were: first place,  Wootton High School, team Kemesstrea, students Christine Chee, Jenny Zhang and Jonathan Yeo, mentor Anila Rakshpal; second place, Wootton High School, team Triple Entente, students Chao-Yuan (Paul) Ku, Steven Lugerner and Hung Yuan (Justine) Wang, mentor Anila Rakshpal; third place, James M. Bennett High School, team Chromium, students Sophia Shakur, Mike Laws and Josh Layfield, mentor Ron Peterman.
