Congressman BenjaminCardin to Speak on Social Security

class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---As the Eastern Shore’s population ages, issues like Social Security are receiving a great deal of attention. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, recognized expert on Social Security and retirement issues, will discuss plans to “privatize” Social Security at a Town Hall meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall.

class=""MsoNormal"">Cardin recently released a statewide report claiming that President George W. Bush’s proposal to privatize Social Security could reduce the benefits of 1.8 million Marylanders. Recently, the Congressman has introduced legislation that, he believes, could help younger and lower income Americans save more for retirement as a way to supplement Social Security.

class=""MsoNormal"">"The public clearly has serious concerns about the president’s plan,” said Rep. Cardin. “The Social Security program faces a financing problem, but the American people understand that private accounts divert money away from the program – ultimately weakening it.”

He is a member of the Ways and Means Committee, ranking member of the Trade Subcommittee and a member of the Human Resources Subcommittee.
