Cox Demonstrates Contemporary Cello April 10  

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Frank Cox, an award-winning composer, brings cutting edge music to Salisbury State University when he demonstrates his contemporary solo cello techniques Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in Holloway Hall’s Great Hall. A lecture follows Wednesday, April 11, from 3-5 p.m. in Fulton Hall 112 for the Theory and Composition Seminar.

The accomplished musician discusses his compositions and modern cello performance techniques found in avant-garde music composed within the last 20 years.

Cox has written works for a variety of instruments and ensembles including piano, flute, orchestra and chorus. His modern compositions have been performed by leading new-music groups and at festivals in Europe and America. He is also a member of numerous professional orchestras and chamber and new-music ensembles including the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Group for Contemporary Music and KNM Berlin in Germany. Cox founded the Extended Vocal Resources Ensemble in 1990, which he directed until 1993. From 1993-1995 he was a lecturer at the University of California at San Diego.

After growing up in Dayton, OH, Cox earned his degrees in composition and performance from Indiana University (1984), his masters from Columbia University (1987) and his Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego (1993).

His awards include an Alison M. Ditson Fund Fellowship in New York, Los Angeles Arts Commission Contest, Regent’s and Research Fellowships in California, scholarships to 1988 Boulez Festival and stipendiums/residences for the 1998 Berlin Biennale and the 2000 Munich Biennale.
