Cupas Exhibit Features Abstract Art Collection

SALISBURY, MD -- “Abstract Art,” a collection of paintings and collages by Salisbury University alumna Judy Cupas, is featured in the Guerrieri University Center Atrium Gallery from September 7 - October 5.  An opening reception is held Friday, September 7 from 5-7 p.m.

Cupas uses acrylics and Flashe, a French vinyl, on a variety of surfaces, including paper, Masonite, art board and canvas.  Her smallest work is 12 x 12 inches; the largest is 48 x 48 inches.

Cupas describes her work as abstract and non-representational, depicting objects that are not recognizable nor realistic.  She said she is attracted to abstract art “because it’s so visceral and unpredictable.  It evokes gut-level reactions which engage the senses, memory and intelligence.  The layers of meaning intended by the artist are mingled with the experience of the viewer.  I like the energy, the ambiguity and the relationships.”

Cupas’s work has been previously shown on campus as part of SU’s 75th Anniversary exhibit, as well as at the Art Institute & Gallery in Salisbury; The Balcony Gallery in Berlin; The Finer Side in Salisbury; and The Blue Room in Ocean City.

Cupas earned her B.A. in art from SU in 1990, graduating summa cum laude with a concentration in two- and three-dimensional design studio.  She developed and taught a demonstration-project drawing course at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover.  A former AI&G painting instructor, Cupas also maintained an art therapy practice from 1992 – 1995 after earning her M.A. in art therapy from George Washington University.

Born in 1941 in California, Cupas has lived in Hawaii, Virginia and Washington, D.C., before moving to the Eastern Shore.  She is married to Chris Cupas and has two grown sons and a 16-year-old stepdaughter.

Sponsored by University Galleries, admission to the show is free, and the public is invited.  For more information, please call the Gallery Offices at 410-548-3972 or 410-548-2547, or visit the University Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
