Environmental Hazards Subject of April 27 Lecture"  

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Susan Cutter, an expert in the field of environmental hazards, speaks at Salisbury State University’s Undergraduate Research Conference on Friday, April 27, in Holloway Hall Auditorium from 4-5 p.m. The lecture is free and the public is invited.

“Cutter emerged as someone who could give a broadly based talk and touch on topics relating to all four of SSU’s schools,” said SSU Math and Computer Science Professor Dr. Mike Bardzell, who helped to select the speaker.

She discusses environmental hazards in our surroundings--both made-made and natural. Bardzell said her lecture touches on many disciplines, ranging from the sciences to social studies.

As a geography professor at South Carolina University and co-founding editor of Environmental Hazards, Cutter remains active in the field of environmental hazards after more than 25 years. She is the director of the Hazard Research Lab, a center that trains and integrates geographical processing techniques with hazard analysis and management.

Cutter also serves on the Advisory Committee for the National Hazards Center in Boulder, CO; the User Working Group for NASA’s Socioeconomic Data Archive Center at Columbia University; and the Heinz Center Panel on Social Causes and Consequences of Coastal Hazards. Federal Emergency Management Administration as well as numerous state and local governments have relied on her knowledge and experience.

In 1999 Cutter was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is also president of the Association of American Geographers. 

Cutter’s seven books include South Carolina Atlas of Environmental Risks and Hazards (1999), Living with Risk (1993), Environmental Risks and Hazards (1994) and Exploitation, Conservation, Preservation: A Geographic Perspectives on Natural Resource Use (1999), a widely used textbook now in its 3rd edition.
