Faculty members participate in joint mathematics meeting

SALISBURY, MD ----Several Salisbury University faculty members recently participated in the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in Baltimore.

Dr. Homer W. Austin presented "Number Theory from a Multicultural and Historical Perspective: A Math ADEPT Course" at the MAA session on Courses and Projects Addressing the Shortage of K-12 Teachers.

Dr. Harel Barzilai was co-organizer of the MAA session on Courses and Projects Addressing the Shortage of K-12 Teachers. At that session he presented "Conceptual Algebra for Teachers: Integrating Algebra into a New Graduate Program for Middle School Teachers."

Dr. Michael J. Bardzell presented a poster, "The PascGalois Project: Visualizing Abstract Algebra," at the MAA poster session on Projects Supported by the NSF Division of Undergraduate Education. Dr. Kathleen Shannon is co-author of the poster.

Dr. Jennifer A. Bergner presented "The Concept of Point: A Historical and Metaphorical Perspective" at the SIGMAA session on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education.

Dr. Steven M. Hetzler was co-organizer of the MAA general contributed paper sessions. He also presented "Using the Writing Process to Help Teach the Mathematical Modeling Process" at Mathematical Modeling In and Out of the Classroom and "Reading Discrete Mathematics: A Semester-long Assignment in Communication" at the MAA session on Getting Students to Discuss and to Write About Mathematics.

Professor Kurt E. Ludwick presented "Sums of Squares and Congruence Restrictions of the Theta Function" at the AMS special session on Modular Forms, Elliptic Curves and Related Topics.

Dr. E. Lee May was a panelist for the MAA panel discussion, Successful Strategies for Implementing a Texas-style (modified Moore method) Course.

Dr. Mohammad Moazzam presented "Mathematics in the Islamic Era" at the MAA general contributed paper session.

Shannon presented "The PascGalois Project: Visualization Projects for Abstract Algebra," at the MAA session on Creative Visualization Labs. Bardzell is co-author of the paper.

Dr. Donald Spickler presented "The Cartesian Triad: Algebra, Geometry, and the Cartesian Coordinate System - A Focus on Middle School Math Teachers" at the MAA general contributed paper session; "Making the Transition from Euclidean to Non-Euclidean Geometry Through Exploration," at Creative Visualization Labs; and "Environmental Data Motivates the Connections Between Algebra and Geometry" at the MAA session on Environmental Mathematics in the Classroom.

Dr. Robert M. Tardiff presented "Portfolio Design and the Genetic Algorithm" at the MAA session on Mathematics Experiences in Business, Industry and Government.

Dr. Barbara Wainwright presented "Statistical Activities for a Math ADEPT Course: Improving Middle School Teachers' Statistical Reasoning" at the MAA session on Best Statistics Projects/Activities.
