Foreign Study Scholarship Established" 

SALISBURY, MD -- A Florida physician with family ties to Salisbury State University has donated a $225,000 endowed scholarship to the Seidel School of Education and Professional Studies to send education students abroad for one year--all expenses paid.

“The scholarship program for foreign study will enable the recipient to broaden his or her education in a way similar to the opportunity that was given me as a student in Oxford, England,” said Dr. William Bosley of Lakeland, FL. 

The Bosley Scholar’s Program for Foreign Study was established in memory of his brother, Dr. John Howard Bosley, a distinguished alumnus from the Class of 1957, and his father, Dr. Howard E. Bosley, the first dean (1949-1956) of the University, then known as the State Teachers College. At that time the college had some 350 students. 

 “My father would be very pleased to see the progress and growth of the State Teachers College at Salisbury to what has now become one of the prides of Maryland,” Bosley said.

After graduating from SSU, John Bosley, his brother, went on to receive his master’s degree from Columbia University and his doctorate from Catholic University. He had a distinguished teaching career, including Frostburg State University and the United States Naval Academy.

William Bosley, M.D., is a head, neck and facial plastic surgeon. He graduated from the SSU campus elementary school in 1951, and has fond memories of life on campus including the fellowship of members of the faculty and staff.

According to Michael Jessup, director of annual giving, SSU students frequently plan to study abroad and scholarships such as this will make it easier. A charitable remainder trust, the scholarship comes from interest on the endowment.

Eligible students must be in the Seidel School and demonstrate exceptional aptitude in the field of education, possess the highest moral standards of citizenship and leadership, have at least a 3.0 GPA and have studied at SSU for at least three years.

A committee from the Seidel School will meet to choose one candidate each year, however, the scholarship does not have to be awarded annually.
