Gelbman Receives Washburn History Prize" 

SALISBURY, MD -- The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury State University recently awarded Doris Gelbman, 40, of Salisbury with the 2001 Wilcomb E. Washburn Student Prize for History.

The annual $500 student prize is awarded for an outstanding writing on the history of Delmarva prior to 1950 using the Nabb center’s records and primary resources. The award is made possible by an endowment from the William H. Donner Foundation of New York. 

Gelbman’s essay, Politics, religion and Money in the Maryland-Virginia Boundary Dispute, discusses the history of the border disagreement between the two neighboring states from the early 17th century to today.

A native Marylander, Gelbman has traveled throughout the world, worked as a computer analyst and with radio and television before attending SSU. An honors student majoring in history, Gelbman is an active member in the human rights group Rainbow Room Inc., Free State Justice and plans to attend law school in Boston following graduation.
