Grammy Nominee Cimarron Concludes SU's Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration October 12

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s 2015 Hispanic Heritage Month Festival culminates with a performance by Grammy Award nominee Cimarrón 7 p.m. Monday, October 12, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

The band’s Smithsonian Folkways album Sí Soy Llanero was nominated for a Grammy for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2005. Its latest CD, ¡Cimarrón! Joropo Music from the Plains of Columbia, was named Best Album, Latin Category, at the 2012 Independent Music Awards.

From the cattle-raising Llanos Orientales region of Colombia, the group performs the festive dance music of joropo, consisting of rippling melodies and powerful rhythms. It combines Andalusian, indigenous Indian and African roots to create a unique sound.

Led by harpist Carlos Rojas, Cimarrón experiments with the tradition of Llanero music — distinctive for its use of the harp, maracas and a small guitar called a cuatro — while retaining its traditional essence.
