Guerrieri Center Art Space Presents Works by Jeff Bell September 1-September 30

Spacial Reasoning SALISBURY, MD---The Guerrieri University Center Art Space hosts the exhibit “Spacial Reasoning” by Salisbury University senior art major Jeffrey Bell through Tuesday, September 30.

A native of Carroll County, MD, Bell was introduced to art through a desire to become a traditional letterpress and offset printer, studying printing techniques at a technical high school. He enrolled in SU to study graphic design, but developed a passion for painting, as well.

“I can recall during a less than thrilling lecture on mathematics or English, I would set my mind on simple linear drawings,” he said. “I found myself constantly confounded by the sheer fact that some organizations looked more interesting than others.

“It would plague me as I drew the same shapes overtop of one another, looking for assurance that they would one day make sense, unified and complete. It would be a long time before my work with graphic design and layouts helped me rationalize the ways in which organized space can function, and even longer before I would decide to make these organizations my daily challenge. My linear compositions can be manipulated to reveal space, create tension and exploit multiplicity.

“The act of rendering real objects stopped appealing to me when I discovered that to put a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional canvas abstracted reality. I wanted to follow in the traditions of the 1950s and 1960s where art could be an object itself, but turning away from tradition, I didn’t want the pieces to end there.

“I wanted to create a potential duality of foreground and background in which almost every piece of art is able to have multiple painted objects lapped on top of one another. It becomes the audience’s job to decipher these overlaps to see within them their potential fluidity.”

The Art Space is located in the Guerrieri Center’s second-floor concourse. Admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6247 or visit the Art Space website at https://www.salisbury.edu/guc/artspace.
