Leoutsakas Appointed to National CDC Position

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Dennis Leoutsakas, assistant professor of communication and theatre arts in the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts at Salisbury University, was appointed recently to the Advisory Committee on HIV and STD Prevention and Treatment of the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) by Tommy G. Thompson, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Leoutsakas has served as the public health representative for the Alaska HIV/AIDS Program and the director of clinical services for the Tampa AIDS Network. He also has served as a member of the advisory board for the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center and a member of the board of directors for the National Association of Peoples with AIDS. He published “Assigning New Meanings to Traditional Literature: Illustrations for HIV Educators” in the AIDS Educations and Prevention: An Interdisciplinary Journal. He also has held health communication seminars at SU including, “Communication of Health and Social Issues through Literature and the Arts.” “One of the reasons I relocated to Salisbury was to have a greater impact on national policy development regarding HIV and AIDS,” said Leoutsakas. “Aside from prevention, I’m especially interested in the ability to provide total care to HIV and AIDS patients.
