MCIA Hosts Capacity-Building and Training Workshop at SU May 9

SALISBURY, MD---The national recession is forcing Marylanders to make lifestyle adjustments including changing career fields, searching for new employment, threats of foreclosure and struggling to make utility bill payments. To assist in developing strategies to address those challenges, the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs will host a Capacity-Building and Training Workshop at Salisbury University on May 9.

The free workshop, to be held in the Guerreri University Center on the Salisbury campus from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., includes a free lunch with an abundance of free parking available. Two sets of three concurrent workshop sessions will provide information on mortgage and foreclosure, college preparation, child support, energy assistance, grant application and health d
care.

A job fair offering employment opportunities will run in conjunction with the workshop sessions schedule. Participating vendors include the FBI, Maryland State Police, Department of Parole and Probation, and the Life Crisis Center for domestic violence. The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation will also have its Mobile One-Stop RV on site. The mobile unit known as M-1 is equipped with 10 computers, an internet satellite and resource information to assist Marylanders in the five upper shore counties.

The M-1 Unit staff works directly with customers, matching them with the Maryland Workforce Exchange (MWE), helping clients develop strong interview and resume skills and provide on-line job application assistance. M-1 staff will also provide GED practice testing, and placement testing for Chesapeake College.
