Modern Languages Department Hosts Foreign Film Festival

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Modern Languages Department celebrates National Foreign Language Week March 7-11 with a festival of foreign films. The German Club inaugurates the series 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in Henson Hall, Room 148, with a screening of 2004 Golden Globe nominee Goodbye Lenin. The film centers on Christiane Kemer, an East German socialist who awakens from a coma in 1989 shortly after the collapse of the Berlin Wall. To protect her from the shock, her son hatches an outlandish plan to shelter her from the new, unified Germany. The movie won six prestigious European Film Awards, including Best Picture. It is shown in German with English subtitles. The Spanish Club follows 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, in Henson Hall, Room 109, with Tortilla Soup. Starring Raquel Welch and Hector Elizondo, the romantic comedy from director Maria Ripoll follows a successful Los Angeles chef and her three grownup daughters as they pursue independent lives while maintaining family traditions. The film is shown in English. The French Club concludes the festival with Le Roi de Coeurs 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in Henson Hall, Room 113. The movie explores the absurdity of war and the power of love in the French countryside during World War I as a Scottish soldier goes to an abandoned village to dismantle explosives. The inmates of a local insane asylum who were not evacuated complicate his task. The R-rated movie is shown in French with English subtitles and is not suitable for those under age 17.
