Nabb Research Center Prepares for May Fundraiser

SALISBURY, MD---The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury University hosts its annual fundraiser Saturday, May 21, at the 18th century Cellar House Plantation on the Pocomoke River.

"Uncle Dan'l," an early 1800s American Empire chest constructed of walnut and burl walnut veneer, with fluted pilasters resting on button feet will be auctioned as part of the festivities. Edgar Dashiell transported "Uncle Dan'l" from Wetipquin to Mount Vernon (then known as Hungary Neck) in a scow when he fell in love and married sassy Elizabeth Webster in 1854.

There the couple lived with "Uncle Dan'l", where "Uncle Dan'l" overlooked another fine Eastern Shore river for more than 150 years before he got an "itchin’" to travel. Gossip has it "Uncle Dan'l" heard about this year's social and hoped that maybe another of the Dashiell descendants might give him a change of venue.

An earlier love story caused the construction of the Cellar House. The house was thought built in the 1730s by a wealthy French pirate for his bride.  When their love soured the pirate ended her life at Cellar House Plantation, and there, some say, she still walks on misty May evenings. Proceeds from the event go toward the Nabb Research Center’s mission of preserving Delmarva's heritage, as well as finding homes for old friends like "Uncle Dan'l."
