New Scholarship Offered in Honor of Dr. William Folger

class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---The accomplishments of Dr. William Folger, director of choral activities at Salisbury University, were music to the ears of at least one local philanthropist.

class=""MsoNormal"">The Salisbury University Foundation has announced the William M. Folger Scholarship Program, established by an anonymous donor to honor Folger’s work at SU.

class=""MsoNormal"">Folger has just completed his second year at SU. Through the new program, $300 will be awarded each semester to a selected student member of the University Chorale, a 19-member ensemble of SU students which Folger directs.

class=""MsoNormal"">“It doesn’t happen every day that someone steps forward and honors our active faculty,” said Kim Nechay, assistant director of the SU Foundation and director of development in SU’s Advancement Division. “We are proud to accept this gift to honor Dr. Folger.”

class=""MsoNormal"">“I am very pleased and greatly honored to have the new scholarship for University Chorale students created in my name and I am very thankful for the donor's support of choral music at SU,” said Folger. “The scholarship will help immensely with recruiting for the choral music program. I hope that developing a vibrant and continually growing choral program will honor the generous contributor.”

class=""MsoNormal"">Under Folger’s leadership, members of the SU Chorale and Chamber Choir performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York City Chamber Orchestra and Festival Chorus this year. This semester he led the 36-member Salisbury Chorale, comprised of students and community vocalists, in a successful partnership with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra to perform Mozart’s Requiem, K. 626.

class=""MsoNormal"">At SU, Folger also directs the 14-member Chamber Choir and co-teaches the University’s semi-annual musical theatre workshop with Dr. Darrell Mullins of the Communication and Theatre Arts Department. Folger earned his D.M.A. from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu. "
