New Student Reader Essay Contest Winners Announced
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University freshmen biology major Apeksha Ghumatkar of Salisbury and accounting major Jennifer Martin of Elkton, MD, are the winners of this year’s SU New Student Reader essay contest.
Students were invited to submit essays relating to the 2017 New Student Reader selection, Sula by Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison. The 1973 book painted a vivid picture of the meaning — and cost — of being an African American woman.

The New Student Reader program was initiated in 2005 as a way to orient new students to the academic community by sharing a common reading experience with classmates, faculty, staff and upperclassmen who serve as orientation team peer leaders.
