PDS Grant: Pinehurst Elementary School 

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University recently received a $12,500 grant from the Maryland State Department of Education to continue a professional development school partnership with Pinehurst Elementary School in Salisbury.

The grant proposal was authored by Dr. Laurie Andes, assistant professor of education in the Seidel School of Education and Professional Studies at SU.  The project coordinator is Dr. Teena Gorrow, assistant professor of education in the Seidel School; the project director is Dr. Doug Ball, assistant professor of education in the Seidel School.

The grant will fund a two-day summer workshop and four after-school workshops.  Special education teachers will share strategies that work with special needs children.  Special education teachers will also have a greater role in mentoring preservice teachers.

As in the first year of the grant, the focus in year two will be on student achievement, with preservice teachers following the Individual Education Plans (IEP) of children and assisting classroom teachers as part of their coursework.  Interns will also be hired to work during August and January and will commit to a yearlong experience at Pinehurst in order to be hired as teacher assistants.
