Publication on Terrorism Features Chapters by Faculty

SALISBURY, MD---A new book describing numerous aspects of terrorism, including the vulnerability of airports to terrorist attacks, features chapters by Salisbury University professors Vaughn E. Wagner and Haven Simmons.

“Chemical and Bioterrorism” by Wagner of the the Henson School’s Biology Department and “Media/Public Information and Terrorism” by Simmons of the the Fulton School’s Communications and Theatre Arts Department are part of Terrorism: Defensive Strategies for Individuals, Companies and Governments, a 472-page tome published by Amlex Inc. and edited by former FBI agent and U.S. Congressman from Maryland Lawrence J. Hogan.  Wagner and Simmons contribute their work alongside some of the country’s top experts on terrorism.

“The book is a multi-disciplinary approach on how to handle terrorism,” said Wagner.  “It has been in the works for two years and its publication is, unfortunately, quite timely.”

Wagner is an assistant professor of environmental health science at SU and believes that the book could serve as a textbook for a multi-departmental course on the integrated response to terrorist activities.  He has over 30 years experience in environmental health and toxicology and has authored, edited and contributed to numerous scientific publications.  He is board certified in medical entomology specializing in human health effects of parasitic bioagent exposures and has held leadership positions in environmental toxicology, pollution control and risk assessment at local, state and federal government levels.  His professional appointments include an adjunct faculty position at the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Emergency Training Center (NETC).

Since 1997 Simmons has taught the media-public information component of terrorism classes at FEMA.  He began teaching at SU that same year.  His articles on police work and public safety were recently published in the Newspaper Research Journal, Contemporary Sociology and Communications and the Law.  His experience working in and around the media is extensive, including five years as a government spokesman, six years as a television reporter and four years as a newspaper reporter.
