SGA Hosts Competition in Connection with RecycleMania Mar. 14

SALISBURY, MD---In the past four years, Salisbury University’s resident students have participated in the national RecycleMania program, competing against other colleges and universities nationwide to see which one could recycle the most.

This year, it’s personal. Or at least SU’s Student Government Association hopes it will be.

From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, March 14, in Red Square, the SGA is offering a free organic T-shirt for every student who turns in at least five recyclable items. For SU’s student clubs and organizations, the stakes are even higher. The group that brings in the most receives $100, with second place earning $50. (There is a three-trash-bag minimum.)

The national contest, which involves more than 600 colleges and universities throughout the United States, continues through Saturday, April 2.

“We’re trying to capture these materials before the reach the Dumpster,” said Rebecca Rossing-Johnson, SU grounds and horticulture manager.

In addition to vying with other schools, the University’s nine residence halls also compete against each other for “recycling points” that will count toward their overall score at SU’s annual student-run Spring Olympics. Results of recycling by weight are posted weekly for students to monitor their halls’ progress.
