SSO Concert Features Suite from 'The Lord of the Rings'

SALISBURY, MD---A program of classical and contemporary works including a symphonic suite from the acclaimed film The Lord of the Rings will be performed at the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University’s Mid-winter Concert, on Saturday, February 7, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. The evening, with works by Beethoven, Carl Maria von Weber and Gustav Holst, begins at 8 p.m. Guest conductor is longtime leader of the Salisbury music community and faculty emeritus at SU, Dr. Charles F. Smith, Jr.  A charter member of the SSO, the popular musician and teacher is probably most familiar to local residents as the 30-year conductor of the Salisbury Community Band. The program consists of March from ‘A Moorside Suite’ by Holst; Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra in E flat major by von Weber with clarinet soloist Otello Meucci, and three movements from Symphony No. 1 in C major by Beethoven. The concluding selection will be the Symphonic Suite from “Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring” composed by Howard Shore and arranged by John Whitney.
