SU Celebrates Earth Week April 18-22

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University commemorates Earth Week with a series of special events April 18-22.

Activities begin Monday, April 18, with the Student Government Association’s (SGA’s) popular Recycle Madness event from noon-4 p.m. in Red Square.

Students are encouraged to bring clean aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard, paper and tin to the collection site, with prizes for Registered Student Organizations that bring in the most recyclable items. Recyclables collected will be used as materials during a trash sculpture contest sponsored by the Art Department on Wednesday, April 20.

Also on April 18, SU’s Environmental Studies House hosts a recycled dog toy workshop at noon. Students will have the opportunity to transform old T-shirts into dog toys to be donated to the Humane Societies of Wicomico and Talbot counties.

The Delmarva Discovery Center and Salisbury Zoological Park’s “Zoo to You” program present live animal demonstrations in the Quad from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, April 19. From 2:30-6 p.m., students shopping at the Camden Avenue Farmers Market at Asbury United Methodist Church, adjacent to campus, can show their Gull Cards for gift certificates to vendors.

That evening, three student competitors will showcase their best dishes during an “Iron Sea Gull” cooking competition in the Commons. Judges include Food Network Holiday Baking Championship finalist Steve Konopelski. Local farmers donate vegetables for the dishes. The winning student’s dish will be featured at the Commons at a later date.

Students have the opportunity to view a renewable energy display from 12-3 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in Red Square, featuring a bicycle generator and cookie baking using solar power.

That evening, environmental studies students present on how they, as one in 7.3 billion people around the world, reduced their environmental footprints for one month. The “One in 7.3 Billion Project Showcase” begins at 7 p.m. in the Nanticoke Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

The Salisbury SGA hosts a dirty sock contest to help promote the Zipcar service on campus from noon-4 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in Red Square. Each competing student will hold a clean white sock up to his or her car’s exhaust for 30 second. Those with the cleanest and dirtiest sock will receive prizes.

Student volunteers plant a native species garden on campus to celebrate Earth Day on Friday morning, April 22, as this semester’s SU Green Fund project. The idea was submitted by students and the project paid for with student sustainability fees. That afternoon, students have the opportunity to build their own terrariums from 1-3 p.m. in Red Square.
