SU Celebrates Music in Our Schools Month

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates Music in Our Schools Month with a series of performances March 4-28.

All events are in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall unless otherwise noted.

Past winners and participants in the Maryland competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) join other SU voice students to inaugurate the series with a Singers’ Showcase on Wednesday, March 4.

Held in conjunction with National Foreign Language Week, the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Featured selections include operatic arias and art songs, as well as Broadway favorites. Suggested donation for admission is $5-$25. Proceeds benefit the SU Opera Workshop and future vocal events. The public is invited.

The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra presents its annual Children’s Concert, “Music About Earth and Beyond” 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen, the performance features selections from Star Wars, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and Holst’s The Planets: Suite for large orchestra. The series continues with senior recitals by mezzo soprano Miesha Burley on Sunday, March 7, and trumpeter Tom Davis on Friday, March 27. Accompanied by pianist Susan Zimmer, both are at 7 p.m.

Brass musicians gather for Eastern Shore Trombone Day on Monday, March 23, in Fulton Hall (time TBA).

The celebration continues with a performance by the Trillium Piano Trio 7 p.m. Saturday, March 28. Based near the Smoky Mountains, this acclaimed group makes its Eastern Shore debut following a week of workshops and master classes with SU students.

Members of the trio — Alison Maerker Garner, violin; Alicia Randsi-Hooker, cello; and Robert Bonham, piano — have performed throughout the United States, Europe, South America and India.
