SU Commemorates V-Day With The Vagina Monologues

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University presents The Vagina Monologues Friday-Saturday, February 20-21, in the Wicomico Room at the Guerrieri University Center to commemorate SU’s second annual V-Day College Campaign, a movement to stop violence against women. Curtain is 8 p.m. Conceived by Obie Award-winning playwright Eve Ensler in 2001, V-Day represents a global campaign to raise awareness of violence against females. The program was named one of Worth Magazine’s “100 Best Charities.” More than 1,500 college campuses participate in V-Day each year. According to the “2000 United Nations Study on the Status of Women,” somewhere in America a woman is battered, usually by her intimate partner, every 15 seconds. According to National Campus Outreach Services, a rape occurs on each college campus in the United States every 21 hours. U.S. Bureau of Justice statistics show from 1993-1998, women ages 16-24 experienced the highest per capita rates of intimate violence at 19.6 per 1,000 women. Celebrated as the bible for a new generation of women, The Vagina Monologues celebrates female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery, giving voice to the fantasy and fears of many women.
