SU Concert Band Performs Thursday, May 8

SALISBURY, MD---On screen, Charlie Chaplin was a comedic genius. However, not many know about his contributions to the comedy film genre on the other side of the camera.

The Salisbury University Concert Band explores one of these contributions—Chaplin’s successful efforts to score some of the music that accompanied his silent movies—during its annual spring concert 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Conducted by Lee Knier, Charlie Chaplin Band Portrait includes four songs written by Chaplin: “The Terry Theme” from Limelight, “Park Avenue Waltz,” “Double Martini” and “Smile.”

The band also performs “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” from Lohengrin. The 19th century romantic opera features the mysterious Guardian of Brabant, accused of being a magician in medieval Germany.

Other pieces include “Suite from Carmen,” “Reflective Mood” with trombone soloist Michael Devine, “The Klaxon March,” “Liberty Bell March” and “Concertino for Flute” with soloist Jessica Morgan. In the Miller Mood is a medley of seven of influential bandleader Glenn Miller’s most famous arrangements, including “In the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade” and “Little Brown Jug.”
