SU Dance Company Hosts Annual Spring Concert April 19-22

Salisbury University Dance CompanySALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Dance Company, directed by Mary Avara, hosts its annual Spring Concert from Thursday-Saturday April 19–22, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Curtain is 8 p.m., 2 p.m. Sunday.

Guest choreographer and performer Jennifer Yackel returns to present a modern work for six company dancers.

A Salisbury native, Yackel is a Philadelphia-based dance artist whose career has taken her from performing with the Richmond Ballet and Ballet Theater of Maryland to the NADINE project, a choreography mentoring program. She also performs during the concert.   

Choreography by two company alumnae, Katie Erdman-Harrison and Kerry Brennan, also is included in the program. Harrison presents a light-hearted contemporary piece, while Brennan’s work is an upbeat jazz-African fusion.

Harrison is a mathematics teacher at Kenwood High School in Essex, MD, where she initiated an afterschool dance program. She also is a dance teacher/choreographer for the Mid-Atlantic Youth Ballet in Towson, MD.

Brennan worked for Migrant Clinicians Network after graduation. She currently teaches dance, instructs group exercise classes and manages the Lotus Yoga Studio at the Personal Wellness Center in Salisbury.

Local guest artists London Owen and Drew Yowell present contemporary works during the concert. Owen, who has worked and presented pieces in the past two spring concerts, is a graduate of the University of Arizona and a former NFL cheerleader.

Yowell received a degree in dance choreography from East Carolina University and performed as guest artist in the SU Dance Company’s 2017 Fall Student Showcase. Both teach dance in the Salisbury area.

Company member and choreographer Willow Saunders reprises “Falling Together,” originally presented in the 2017 Fall Student Showcase and selected for presentation in this concert by a panel of professional dance adjudicators.   

The program concludes with a jazz finale by SU dance faculty member Jessica Hindman.

Admission is $12; $9 for seniors 60-plus, teens and SU alumni; $5 for non-SU students with ID; $3 for SU students with Gull Card. Children under 12 are admitted free.   

Reservations are not required. Tickets may be purchased online in advance at www.salisbury.edu/performingarts or at the door beginning 30 minutes before curtain.
